Rafael Gabriel Múgica Celaya was born in Hernani, Guipúzcoa in 1911. He was a member of the Student Residence in Madrid. In 1935, he finished his studies and returned home to work in the family business and published his first book. In 1947, he funded the poetry collection ‘Norte’, together with his wife, Amparo Gastón. In 1956, he stopped working as an engineer to dedicate himself to writing. It was at this time that he wrote his most socially engaged poetry. He was against the Franco regime, and after the dictatorship ended, he stood as the Communist party’s candidate for Guipúzcoa in the 1977 general election. His career as a poet was rewarded in 1986 with the National Spanish Literature Prize. He died in Madrid in 1991.
