" Painter from the Golden Age. Together with Velazquez and Alonso Cano, they form the golden triad of the painters of the Sevillian Baroque style."

He was born in Fuente de Cantos (Badajoz) in 1598. He made a name for himself in religious painting, where his work was distinguished by its visual impact and deep mysticism. He was an artist who was representative of the Counter-reformation. He is thought to have started working as a painter in the school of Juan de Roelas in his native city before entering the workshop of Pedro Díaz de Villanueva in Seville in 1614, where in 1616 he met Alonso Cano. He also came into contact with Francisco Pacheco and his pupils, as well as absorbing the influence of Juan Sánchez Cotán. His style evolved to resemble the Italian Mannerist masters, and became less similar to the realism of Velazquez. The hallmark of his compositions is his chiaroscuro modelling with sharply contrasting tones. He died in Madrid in 1664.
