"Architect. His works pursue the effect of chiaroscuro through the combination of architectural elements. He is considered a forerunner of the Baroque style."

He was born in Cuenca in 1553. He was a disciple of Juan de Herrera, with whom he worked on the construction of the Alcázar fortress in Segovia and the Monastery of San Lorenzo in El Escorial, which he took over on the death of his mentor. His style was originally sober, devoid of ornamentation, geometric, symmetrical and with large open spaces. He used slate for roofs, which he crowned with capitals. This period of his career is marked by a range of constructions, including the Plaza Mayor square in Madrid and the Uclés monastery in Cuenca. In later life he moved away from the strict Herrerrian canons and displayed a greater constructive freedom. An example of this is the Ducal Palace of Lerma (Burgos), considered to be his masterpiece. He is also credited with building Uceda Palace in Madrid, the city in which he died in 1610.
