He was born in Puente Genil, Cordoba in 1932 and was already showing his talent at only eight years old. Before he turned professional, he was known as Antonio de Puente Genil. He wrote the words to his songs himself. Success came when he won his first cante jondo flamenco singing competition in 1956, and the town council of Puente Genil bought him a guitar so that he could learn to play. He performed at the New York World Fair, as part of the Manuela Vargas show. He has made various films, and also toured in concert with Juan Valderrama and Juan Habichuela, performing in several shows with Camarón de la Isla. He has recorded with guitarists of the stature of Paco de Lucía.
