"Film director. He won an Oscar for his film ‘Belle Epoque’ in 1994."

He was born in Madrid in 1955, and started making short films in the 1970s. His debut behind the camera came with ‘Opera prima’, which was a success with the public and critics alike. This was followed by films, such as: ‘Rock salt’, ‘’Be wanton and tread no shame’, ‘The year of awakening’ and ‘The mad monkey’. ‘Belle Époque’ came out in 1992 and won nine Goya and Oscar awards. He then tried his luck in the United States and filmed the comedy ‘Two Much’ in Hollywood with Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith. Later, back in Spain, he filmed ‘the girl of your dreams’ (1998), which won seven Goya awards. ‘Chico and Rita’, his first foray into animated film, was released in 2011. The film won the Goya award for best animated film and was nominated for an Oscar.
