" Journalist and writer. His old-fashioned ditties and songs with their aristocratic air were the cultivated counterpoint to the more popular style known as the género chico."

He was born in Valencia in 1873, and at the age of 6 moved with his family to Barcelona, where as a young man he began his literary and artistic career, with the help of Hermenegildo Anglada. In Madrid he joined the offices of the weekly periodical 'El Clamor' (1893) and then under the direction of Peris Mencheta, turned to investigative journalism, an activity which led to his literary and critical work becoming more sporadic. 'Apuntes para la historia de la canción española' was declared an obligatory text in the Madrid Conservatory. The year 1915 saw the premiere in the Metropolitan Opera House in New York of the Opera 'Goyescas', written in partnership with Enrique Granados, which enjoyed widespread popularity. But his reputation ultimately rested on the words he wrote for songs and ditties reminiscent of the time of Goya, whom he thus helped to rediscover. He died in Valladolid in 1940.
