" His only work, "La Celestina" is one of the most outstanding in Spanish literature. It has been one of the bases for modern novel and theatre."

He was born in La Puebla de Montalbán, in 1470. Although it is said that he belonged to a wealthy family of Jewish converts, new research casts doubt upon this. He studied Law in Salamanca. After earning his degree he started to work as a lawyer in Talavera, where he became mayor. It is believed, almost certainly, that he only wrote one book. This book, however, is very important in the history of literature: "La Celestina" or "The Tragicomedy of Calisto and Melibea". A long book that is written as a play, with dialogues, in 21 acts. He died in Talavera de la Reina in 1541.
