" Poet. He is considered a milestone in the road to overcome Petrarchism, as well as an essential link in the evolution of cultured Castilian poetry."

He was born in Seville in 1534. His contemporaries called him "the Divine". There are not many documents about his life. He was ordained as a cleric and gained a benefit in the parish church of San Andrés in Seville. In 1565, the arrival of don Álvaro de Portugal and his wife, doña Leonor de Milán, counts of Gelves, changed the course of his life. The countess became the centre of his love poems and the count sponsored a literary circle, which he attended with Juan de Mal Lara, Juan de la Cueva and Francisco Pacheco. Most of his works have been lost and there is no trace of some of his earlier works, such as "Gigantomaquia". His "Notes" to Garcilaso's work are true poetry. He died in Seville in 1597.
