" Poet, playwright and novelist. En 1973, Federico de Mendizábal was awarded the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts."

His full name was Federico de Mendizábal y García-Lavin. He was born in Madrid in 1901. He trained in the military, and subsequently went on to study journalism in Madrid, where he worked as a contributor to numerous journals and newspapers. He produced a large body of written work in three different genres: historical and literary essay, the novel, and drama and poetry. He was a member of the Academy of Music and Recitation, the Academy of Letters and the Academy of Fine Arts, both in Seville. He also belonged to similar institutions in Italy, Sweden and Holland. Throughout his life he obtained numerous distinctions and awards. He died in Madrid in 1988.
