" Composer with a solid background in Italian opera. His greatest contribution to the history of Spanish music was his decisive role in consolidating the zarzuela."

Pascual Juan Emilio Arrieta was born in Puente de la Reina (Navarre) in 1823 and studied at the Conservatory in Madrid. In 1841 he entered the Conservatory in Milan where he studied under the maestro Nicola Vaccai. In 1845 he staged his opera 'Ildegonda', which won him the La Scala prize for composition. On his return to Madrid in 1848 he was appointed Singing Master to Isabella II and Master Composer of the Royal Chamber and Theatre of the Royal Palace, where he staged the opera 'The conquest of Granada'. The success enjoyed by Barbieri and Gaztambide led to a resurgence of the zarzuela, and Arrieta embraced the genre to which he contributed over 50 works. He died in Madrid on February 11, 1884.
