Emilio Gil Cerracín was born in Madrid, in 1948. He studied at the Technical University of Madrid, graduating as a quantity surveyor in 1975. In 1980 he founded Tau Diseño, one of the first companies of its kind in Spain, offering design, institutional communication and corporate visual branding. In 1982 he took part in the first Graphic Design Program at New York's School of Visual Arts (SVA), taught by Milton Glaser, James McMullan and Ed Benguiat. He continued his training at Central Saint Martins in London. In 1995 he won the ’Laus de oro’ award for editorial design, the UK's Donside Award and the certificate of excellence of the Type Directors Club (TDC) of New York. He teaches at several Spanish universities. In 2007 he published the book ’Pioneers of Spanish Graphic Design’. From 2009 to 2014 he was the president of the Spanish Association of Professional Designers. He has curated several exhibitions on the history of Spanish graphic design.
