He was born in Madrid in 1899. In 1923, after completing his studies in civil engineering, Eduardo Torroja began working in the Compañía de Construcciones Hidráulicas y Civiles (Civil And Hydraulic Construction Company), headed by Jose Eugenio Ribera, who pioneered the use of reinforced concrete in Spain. In 1927 he joined the Construction Board for the Ciudad Universitaria university campus in Madrid, where he came into contact with the foremost architects of the time, which led him to develop his own aesthetic concept. He thus embarked on his most fruitful period, marked by his distinctive work on projects which brought him international recognition, such as the Algeciras market, the Frontón Recoletos sports centre and the La Zarzuela racecourse. In 1934 he founded the Technical Institute for Construction and Building. In 1939, he began to combine his professional work with teaching, attending congresses and lecturing all over the world. He died at his desk in Madrid in 1961.
