Date of birth

"Painter, sculptor and writer. He is considered one of the leading representatives of pop-art in Spain."

He was born in Madrid in 1937. In 1958 he graduated from the School of Journalism in Madrid and settled in Paris, where he began working as a painter. In 1961 he had his first individual exhibition and in 1963 his work was featured at the Paris Biennial as part of the collective show 'L'Abattoir' ('the slaughterhouse'). This exhibition involved a montage of paintings and sculptures which together comprised an indictment of totalitarianism and of all kinds of physical and ideological repression. His first exhibition in Spain in 1963 was closed buy the censors. In 1965 he took part in the collective exhibition presented in Paris with the title 'Live and let die, or the tragic end of Marcel Duchamp', which was a landmark in European figurative art of the 1960s.
