Juan Manuel de Villena y Borgoña-Saboya was born in Escalona, in 1282. Son of the Infante don Manuel and nephew of Alfonso X the Wise, he inherited the title of general governor of the Kingdom of Murcia and participated actively in the political battles of the time. He got married three times: to the Infanta Isabel de Mallorca, Constancia de Aragón and Blanca, heiress of the house of Lara. He was one of the most cultured men of his time and boosted Castilian prose decisively. His most important work is "Count Lucanor" (1325-1335). The first part is made up of 51 stories, based on Eastern and Christian sources; continues with a series of proverbs and the fifth and last part ends with a moral sermon. He died in Cordoba in 1348.
