" Pianist, composer and conductor. He revitalised the zarzuela and, with Joaquín Gaztambide, Francisco Asenjo Barbieri, José Inzenga and Olona y Salas, he founded the Artistic and Musical Society in order to cultivate the genre."

He was born in Badajoz, and received piano and singing classes from his father, who was a musician for the Napoleonic troops based in Badajoz. He also taught himself to play the trumpet and oboe. He moved to Madrid in 1844, where he was taken on by Mesonero Romanos who acted as his mentor and met Baltasar Saldoni, who helped him produce his first works in public. He composed up to six pieces a year, some in collaboration. He created the music for 'El sitio de Zaragoza', by Juan Lombía, and conducted Italian opera. In 1870 he was appointed musical director of the Teatro Real theatre, where he died during a rehearsal in March 1877.
