Born in Arrecife, Lanzarote in 1920, he studied at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid. During his stay at the Spanish capital, he was one of the pioneers of national abstract painting in the 50s. In 1964, he moved to New York where he discovered the pictorial trends of abstract expressionism or Pop Art. He has held exhibitions at prestigious galleries in New York, an experience which would be fundamental to his later development. In 1966 he returned to live in Lanzarote permanently. His interventions on the island’s landscape through architectural creations which combine a nonintrusive fusion of art and nature have earned him world-famous acknowledgements. He died in Lanzarote in 1992.
