"Poet, essayist and critic. Author of an important poetic collection. He also stands out for his work as a critic and researcher in literary theory."

Born in Boal (Asturias) in 1923, his childhood and adolescence were spent in Oviedo. He obtained a PhD in Philosophy and Letters from the Central University of Madrid, where he would later be a professor from 1950 until his retirement in 1988. His doctoral thesis “La poesía de Vicente Aleixandre” (The Poetry of Vicente Aleixandre) (published in 1950) opened new paths in the current study of lyric poetry, in addition to being an unavoidable reference work for the study of Aleixandre. Author of an abundant and award-winning body of work, which began with the publication of poems “Subida al amor” (Rise to Love) in 1945, title which would be followed by many others. His work, with deep existential roots, shows a clear evolution from realism to symbolism. He became a member of the Royal Academy of Spain in 1979. He died on 24 October 2015.
