" Composer and musicologist. He is considered the precursor of modern Spanish musicology."

Born in Barcelona in 1807, he studied with the Montserrat Boys Choir and trained in Barcelona with Francesc Queralt and Mateu Ferrer. He gave his first organ concert in the church of Santa Maria del Mar. In 1826 he debuted an operetta in one act, with lyrics by José Alegret, thus starting his commitment to secular music. In 1829 he moved to Madrid, where he became friends with Ramón Carnicer. The next year, he obtained a Professorship of music theory at the Maria Cristina Music Conservatory in Malaga. His Italian opera, “Ipermestra,” with libretto by Pietro Metastasio, made a successful debut at the Cruz Theatre in 1838. With “Boabdil, the Last King of Granada” (1845), he made his entrance into Spanish national opera. He died in Madrid in December 1889.
