" Writer and journalist. He is one of the most highly acclaimed and multi-award-winning figures in current literature and one of the best known on the international literary scene."

Born in Cartagena (Murcia) in 1951, he worked for 21 years as a reporter for radio, newspapers and television, covering armed conflicts (Lebanon, El Salvador and the Persian Gulf, among many others). He has received prestigious awards for his work as a journalist. In 1994 he abandoned his reporting work to devote himself exclusively to writing. His work has been translated into 34 languages and many of his novels have been adapted for the screen. The series The Adventures of Captain Alatriste appeared in 1996, chronicling the adventures of a Spanish captain in the Tercios of Flanders. He was made a member of the Royal Spanish Academy on 12 June 2003.
