He was born in Entrialgo in 1853, and died in Madrid in 1938. He spent his childhood in Asturias and moved to Madrid in 1870. Three phases can be distinguished in his work. The first, marked by his friendship with Clarín, includes his early writings in newspapers with Republican tendencies such as 'Rabagás'. The second period, in which he published his best work, was when he began to concentrate on the novel, and concluded in the middle of the last decade of the 19th century. During this time he produced works in the style of the Spanish literary style of the Restoration. From 1896, with the publication of 'Los majos de Cádiz', his work took an ideological shift towards a more conservative stance and began to focus on Christian moral and spiritual issues.
