He was born in Úbeda (Jaén) in 1956. He studied geography and history at the University of Granada, where he specialised in history of art. He lived in Granada for almost 20 years during which time he published his first articles in the press. He later collected these together in his work 'Robinson urbano' and in his first novel 'Beatus Ille' (1986), which received the Ícaro Literature Prize. In January 1992 he moved to Madrid, where in 1994 he married his fellow writer, Elvira Lindo. He has received numerous major prizes for his narrative and journalistic work. He was the director of the Cervantes Institute in New York between 2004 and 2006, and became a member of the Spanish Royal Academy in 1995.
