Antonio Esteve Ródenas was born in Elda (Alicante) in 1936. He learnt to dance with Pilar López, who then took him into her dance company, and encouraged him to adopt his stage name of Antonio Gades. In 1960 he toured Japan as the company's first dancer. He discovered the poetry of García Lorca and became convinced that the most legitimate means of expression for his work was flamenco. In 1962 he founded his own company, and achieved worldwide success with his staging of 'El Amor Brujo' (Love, the magician) in 1969. In 1974 he triumphed again with 'Blood Wedding'. He became the first director of the Spanish National Ballet in 1978, when he took charge of starting up the company. He died in Madrid on 20 July 2004.
