Date of birth

Dec 17, 1927

" Architect. He is considered one of the foremost intellectuals of the 20th century, and received the National Architecture Prize in 2003."

He was born in Salamanca in 1927. He graduated in architecture from the School of Architecture in Madrid, and obtained his doctorate in 1963. He went on to become a teacher at his alma mater for almost 40 years. Throughout his career he has combined his teaching activities with his work at the head of the Institute for the Restoration of Spain's Historic Heritage, of which he was director between 1984 and 1987, and on the board of the Museum of Contemporary Art which he ran between 1987 and 1990. His works include particularly the monastery of El Rollo in Salamanca and the convent of the Carmelitas Descalzas, as well as the restoration of the Madrid Observatory. Disapproving of the architecture of his time, his work is the result of his critical view of architectural space in today's society.
