He was born in Collbató (Barcelona) in 1871. At the age of 11 he joined the choir of the Gran Teatro del Liceo theatre and studied harmony and composition with José Ribera. After several years in Toledo, where he composed various of his works, he returned to Barcelona where he took on the post of chapel master in the church of San Juan de Gracia. Together with Lluís Millet, in 1891 he founded the Orfeó Català choir, with whom he produced several of his own choral compositions. His first opera was staged in 1895. He died in Madrid on December 2, 1932.
