He was born in Torrijos, Toledo in 1488. One of his first works was the Santa Librada Chapel in Sigüenza Cathedral, with a richly decorated altarpiece. He later worked on the main sacristy in the same cathedral. After finishing the church of the Piedad convent in Guadalajara, he was involved in building the Santa Cruz hospital in Toledo, one of the finest examples of his early style. In 1531, he started the Reyes Nuevos Chapel in Toledo Cathedral for Archbishop Fonseca. This work definite recognition and he was named architect to the Emperor Charles I. In his late stage, Covarrubias built the St John the Baptist, or Tavera, hospital and the Alcázar fortress with its splendid courtyard, both in Toledo He died in 1570.
