" Sculptor. He is one of the most outstanding representatives of the Spanish Renaissance."

The son of the famous painter Pedro Berruguete, he was born in Paredes de Nava (Palencia) and died in Toledo in 1561. He travelled to Italy to study the latest artistic trends, and there became acquainted with the work of Michelangelo, Donatello, Leonardo, Sansovino and Lippi. His work shows his strong character and contains images of great dramatic power with an intense spirituality and drama, but always tempered with doses of realism. He decorated the Royal Chapel in Granada and the tomb of Cardinal Sevagio in Zaragoza, on commission from King Charles I of Spain. Among his works are the San Benito altarpiece in Valladolid, the high altar of the College of Los Irlandeses in Salamanca and the left choir stall in Toledo Cathedral.
