" Tenor. He is considered one of the great singing voices of the 20th century, with outstanding performances both in opera and zarzuela.

He was born in Las Palmas on Gran Canaria in 1927, and received singing classes from Mercedes Llopart at the Milan Conservatory. He made his debut in 1956 in Cairo in Verdi’s opera, ‘Rigoletto’, as the Duke of Mantua, a role that later gave him worldwide fame. From then on, he started performing in theatres all over the world, sharing the stage with such famous divas as María Callas. He acted in two films: ‘Gayarre’ (1961) and ‘The vagabond and the star’ (1962). In 1993, he supported the project to create a foundation to help young composers, and called after the Austrian musician, Gottfried von Einem. His home town named an auditorium after him. He died in Madrid in 1999.
