He was born in Allariz, Orense in1945 into an erudite middle-class family. The writer states that his father, a professed pro-Galician, instilled in him a love for the land and its language. He studied Marine Engineering in A Coruña and History at the University of Santiago de Compostela. His social commitment to Galicia led him into politics and he was an independent member parliament with the Galician Social Party, and Minister for Culture between 1987 and 1990. He established his reputation at the beginning of the 1980s when his first novels were published. These combined the culture of rural Galicia with the present-day situation there, in a highly original way, through a narrative voice with outstanding power of imagination and expression.
