He was born in Seville in 1928. The social realism and preoccupation with politics that feature in his early work set him within the ‘mid-century generation’, together with writers such as Ana María Matute, Rafael Sánchez Ferlosio and Juan Goytisolo. His novels ‘La zanja’ (1960), ‘Un cielo difícilmente azul’ (1960) and ‘Testa de copo’ (1963) come from this period. The publication of ‘Inés just coming’ in 1968 marked the start of a new stage in his narrative, characterised by experimenting with form and the elaborate prose that dominates all his works. His writing has been translated into French, German, Rumanian, Swedish, Danish and Czech. He died in Valencina de la Concepción, Seville in 1995.
