"Director, screenwriter, composer and film producer. He won an Oscar in 2005 for the best foreign language film, ‘The Sea Inside’."

He was born in Santiago de Chile in 1972. His family emigrated to Spain 15 days before the Pinochet dictatorship started. In 1990, he began to study at the Faculty of Information Sciences of the Complutense University in Madrid, but abandoned the course. As well as studying, he started to make short films, such as ‘La cabeza’, Himenóptero’ and ‘Luna’. In 1995, together with Mateo Gil, he directed and wrote the feature film ‘Thesis’. The film was directed by José Luis Cuerda and won seven Goya prizes. Thus began a long career marked by success at home and abroad. Among other national and international prizes, he has won eleven Goya prizes and an Oscar in Hollywood. He is one of the most popular Spanish directors with the public and critics.
