"Golden Age theatre playwright belonging to the school of Calderón de la Barca. He was an early exponent of the neoclassical comedy popular in the 17th century."

He was born in Madrid in 1618, the son of rich merchants of Italian origin, and enjoyed a comfortable childhood and youth. Like other great names of his time, he did not distinguish himself academically during his studies in Alcalá de Henares. He frequented theatrical circles in Madrid and wrote short plays and works in collaboration with other writers, one of which was Lope de Vega. In 1642 he was ordained a cleric and obtained a stipend from the church of Mondéjar (Toledo). Of his many comedies, two have become part of the classical repertoire. One of them, 'Disdain with disdain', published posthumously (1679), is the reworking of a previous play by Lope, which itself was subsequently imitated by Molière, Carlo Gozzi and others. It is interesting for its psychological insights into amorous sentiments. He died in Toledo in 1669.
