Created by the Catholic Monarchs, this is the most important of the legal archives of the old regime preserved in Spain
The documents it contains are exclusively judicial in nature and occupy nearly twenty kilometres in total. The funds are from the Royal Courts and Chancery of Valladolid (1371-1834), the highest court of the Kingdom of Castile in the old regime for the territories to the north of the Tagus River; and of the Territorial Court of Valladolid (1834-1988), the court that replaced the Chancery; as well as other lower legal bodies. These documents are particularly valuable for research into the political, social and economic history of Spain from the end of the 15th to the 19th century.
The collections in the archive can be accessed through the Portal of Spanish Archives (PARES), created for the purpose of disseminating over the Internet the Spanish Historical Documents conserved in its network of centres.
