The Archive of the Crown of Aragon is the oldest institution of its kind in Europe. For this reason it was declared part of the European Heritage network.
It was established as the Royal Archives in 1318. The Palau del Lloctinent, a historic building constructed in the Gothic style between 1549 and 1557 in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona, currently hosts the cultural and educational activities organised by the Archives. Its more modern offices in Calle Almogávers are dedicated to custodianship and research. Its documentary collections include documents belonging to the Counts of Barcelona and the Kings of Aragon, Valencia and Majorca in the 9th to 17th centuries, as well as the archives of various civil and ecclesiastical institutions and private archives from the Spanish territories of the Kingdom of Aragon (10th to 20th centuries).
The collections in the archive can be accessed through the Portal of Spanish Archives (PARES), created for the purpose of disseminating over the Internet the Spanish Historical Documents conserved in its network of centres.
