The Provincial Historical Archive of Álava was officially created in 1932, but began to function in 1941. As an intermediate and historic archive, it manages documentation produced by notaries and the State Administration in the province of Álava, as well as other private collections of interest to the province. Its archives thus contain registry and notarised documents that are over one hundred years old. The archive has been located in four different sites; today it is housed in a modern building opened in 2004 near the university area in the city.
