03/02/2017 - 04/06/2017 - Bilbao / Exhibition
In 1940s New York, names like Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, David Smith and Clyfford Still were at the forefront of a new era of painting splendour: Abstract Expressionism. Their canvases, many of them of a colossal size, represented a radical turning point in art, with compositions that were at times intense, expressive and spontaneous.
The exhibition, which brings together over 130 paintings, drawings, sculptures and photographs from public and private collections from all over the world, covers Abstract Expressionism as a complex artistic phenomenon, far removed from all the established formulas, characterised by diversity and individual freedom.
